Jennifer's switch gives helping hand to the top for Enniscorthy

KEEN hockey player Jennifer King began playing golf three years ago as a left-hander and could not understand why she was making such slow progress.

However a friendly tip from a fellow member of Co.Wexford club Enniscorthy that she might try swinging a right-handed club instead did the trick.

Since then her dedication and commitment has seen her handicap tumble to eight and she was a member of the Enniscorthy team which reached the finals of The Mail on Sunday Classic last year, ultimately losing in the semi-finals to eventual winners Sundridge Park.

Now she has teamed up with Eimear McGrath for Enniscorthy in the new Irish Mail All-Ireland Fourball Trophy and the pair have made a promising start with a 4&3 win over Helen and Liz McGoohan of Coollattin.

Eimear McGrath said: ‘I played in the early rounds of The Mail on Sunday Classic last year and travelled with the team as a supporter to El Rompido for the finals. It was a great few days. When the Irish Mail Trophy began, our club naturally wanted to enter so I asked Jennifer if she would like to play with me in the qualifying competition at the club. We had one of those rounds where we dovetailed very well.

‘We played a practice round at Coollattin as they have three fantastic new holes and then when we played the match we had another of those rounds where things just seemed to work for us as a team. Fourball is a great format and we are hoping we can put a good run together.’

Jennifer King has an All Ireland medal in the Irish Mixed Foursomes 2006 and a Junior Cup All Ireland title for 2008. Eimear McGrath, whose husband and two sons are also members of Enniscorthy, has an Intermediate Cup All Ireland title for 2007 and was a reserve on the Junior Cup All Ireland team in 2008.
