Bundoran make it into the big showdown at Macreddin Village

BUNDORAN’s Ian McDaid and Pauric Murphy became the last team through to the finals of the inaugural Irish Mail All-Ireland Fourball Trophy after an impressive 4&3 win over Edenmore’s David Reid and Andrew Ellis.

The pair from the Co.Donegal club were celebrating after they booked their place in next week’s big showdown at the Paul McGinley-designed Macreddin Village course in Co.Wicklow.

They were also relieved that their fifth round victory was considerably easier than their match at Tuam in the previous round where they needed to create a new record in the men’s competition, having to go to the 22nd to win a sudden death play-off.

McDaid said: ‘The Tuam match was really tough. We’d played ten holes practice in the morning, then four holes sudden death as well. Still that is good preparation for Macreddin where we will be playing the semi-final and hopefully the final on the same day. It’s been a terrific year for us and we are delighted to be in the finals. We can’t wait to play at Macreddin Village.’

After a series of qualifying rounds through the summer and spring, the Irish Mail All-Ireland Trophy now culminates in a lavish finals weekend at Macreddin Village, with its stunning championship golf course and award-winning hotel and resort facilities. The semi-final and final will be played over the course which features a breathtaking layout, superlative views and a challenging test of golf. Also through to the men’s finals along with Bundoran are County Antrim club Greenisland, Mannan Castle from Carrickmacross and Tipperary.

The women’s finalists are Carlow, Galway Bay, Co.Derry club Kilrea and Co.Louth club Seapoint.
