Family Warke does the trick as Greenisland reach the finals

GREENISLAND have beaten Rockmount to win the battle of Belfast clubs and become the first team to reach the finals of the inaugural Irish Mail All-Ireland Trophy.

Father and son pair Jim and Peter Warke produced a thrilling 2&1 victory over Rockmount’s Adam Foreman and James Hume, who were the best rated team by handicap in this year’s competition, both playing off four.

The win means nine-hole club Greenisland, situated between the Knockagh war memorial and Belfast Lough, will be one of four men’s teams lining up at the Paul McGinley-designed Macreddin Village course next month for the semi-finals and final of this prestigious new competition.

The victory by the Warkes was their 20th straight fourball win in succession in serious competition and as they celebrated victory Jim Warke said the pair was on a roll.

‘The Rockmount team had very low handicaps, but we’re a fairly confident pair and we fit together well. We are so excited to be through to the final and looking forward to it very much.’

Jim Warke has been a member of Greenisland for 20 years and his son Peter, 23, has played there for ten years.

‘Now we just have to make it 22 straight wins to bring this trophy back to Greenisland,’ added Warke.
