ROCKMOUNT are staging a strong challenge to win the inaugural Irish Mail All-Ireland Trophy.
Adam Foreman and James Hume, who both play off three, are the best rated team by handicap in this year’s competition and after a 3&2 win over Cushendall they have made it through to the quarter-finals. Belfast club Rockmount, who have also beaten Nuremore and Mahee Island, have now been drawn away to Greenisland, with the winner going through to the finals.
Also through to the quarter-finals are Tipperary, the first ever Irish men’s team to capture the Daily Mail Foursomes almost 30 years ago, after Michael Keaty and Liam Rafferty’s impressive 4&3 win over Courtown.
And Mannan Castle, last year’s winners of The Mail of Sunday Classic, one of the precursor tournaments to the Irish Mail Trophy, have joined them after an 18th green victory over Woodlands. Club captain Patrick Brady said: ‘Mannan Castle is an incredibly competitive club. We have over 200 golfers who want to play every weekend and of course they all wanted to play in this new competition. It would be an amazing double if we could win this event as well as The Mail on Sunday Classic.’
The winning teams from the quarter-finals will qualify for the finals of the Irish Mail Trophy to be played at the Paul McGinley designed Macreddin Village course on Setpember 6/7. |
