Five-mile school trip is the perfect preparation for Black Bush win

TEACHER Mary Devine had to go straight from a five-mile school walk along the River Boyne to the first tee of her Irish Mail All-Ireland Trophy match for Black Bush against Lucan.

But it did not stop her and partner Majella Kilduff putting Black Bush into the last eight of the competition with a 3&2 victory which now leaves the Co.Meath club just one match away from the finals at Macreddin Village in September.

Majella Kilduff said: ‘It wasn’t exactly the perfect preparation, but the match had to be arranged in a hurry because one of the Lucan girls was heading off on holidays. However, despite her exertions, it didn’t seem to phase Mary at all.’

Nor did it phase Majella who opened birdie, birdie, birdie to put the pair three up after three holes and create a lead which Black Bush never lost.

Now Black Bush have been drawn to play at the Des Smyth designed Seapoint links course near Drogheda and already Mary Devine has had an early look at the course, playing in a scramble there and finishing second several days before the draw was even made.

Majella added: ‘Hopefully that’s a good sign. We are planning to go and have a practice round before the match and hope our winning streak might continue.’
