A dramatic 18th hole victory at Kilkenny has given Carlow a place in the last eight of the Irish Mail All-Ireland Fourball Trophy, and left Madeleine Brennan and Kay Dowling by their own admission ‘a little shaken’.
After Kay Dowling, who has only been playing golf four years, rolled in the putt for victory, her partner Madeleine Brennan said: ‘When we were asked to play together, we didn’t go into this thinking we could win it. We’re still a bit surprised how well we’ve done, but it was certainly a very big win at Kilkenny.’
They now face Bray in the quarter-finals, with the winning team going forward to the finals at Macreddin Village in September. ‘We’re practising together very, very hard, and we know all about Bray. They have a great young player in Katie Nicholson and of course Marion Corrigan, who is the mum of rugby player Reggie Corrigan, so there’ll be some fighting spirit in the blood.
‘We’re at home and Carlow is one of the finest inland courses in Ireland so we’re hoping that gives us an advantage,’ added Brennan, who teamed up with Kate Hutton in 2003 to win the Lancome All-Ireland Foursomes at Killarney.
Brennan said: ‘It’s particularly pleasing to do so well this year. I was in the team that reached the Irish semi-finals of The Mail on Sunday Classic last year when we lost at Enniscorthy, so it’s great to be able to come straight back and do well in the new competition.’ |
