Edenmore hoping for clean bill of health for their last eight match

EDENMORE’S Andrew Ellis will be spending the next week hoping the phone doesn’t ring to say his partner in the club’s Irish Mail All-Ireland Trophy team is injured.

After beating Crossgar in a thrilling 19th hole sudden death thriller to reach the last eight, David Reid went away on a golfing holiday to North West England.

‘Every time he goes away on a golfing holiday he comes back with an injury
- twisted ankle, bruised arm, cracked ribs. Once he was even run over by a golf buggy. When I heard he was going away, I was determined to get the Crossgar match played before he went,’ said Ellis.

‘We’re just one match away from the finals at Macreddin Village now, which is great, just as long as David comes back in one piece.’

The win over Crossgar was one of the best comebacks seen in the Irish Mail Trophy this year. The Edenmore pair were three down with four to play against Barrie Atkinson and David Watson, but fought back to halve the match, then won the first tie hole.

The win followed a 20th hole sudden death play-off victory in the previous round against Portadown, when they again showed their fighting spirit to come back from two holes down with two to play in normal time.

Ellis said: ‘The match against Crossgar was the toughest match I’ve ever played in my life, but it’s not in our nature to give up. We absolutely love this competition, and it would be great to reach the finals.’

If they win their next match, the Craigavon, Co.Down club will qualify for the finals of the inaugural Irish Mail All-Ireland Fourball Trophy to be played at Paul McGinley’s Macreddin Village course on Setpember 6/7.
