Father and son make it through to the last eight for Greenisland

A FATHER and son team have become the first pair through to the last eight of the Irish Mail All-Ireland Fourball Trophy.

Greenisland’s Jim and Peter Warke beat Hilton Templepatrick’s Stephen Jenkins and Ronnie McCullough on the 18th green after a blistering back nine which featured five birdies and four pars.

The victory by the Co.Antrim team was their 19th fourball win in succession and Jim Warke said: ‘We’re a fairly confident pair. We’ve won the club’s fourball betterball competition two years running and now we are adding wins in the Irish Mail Trophy.

‘We are having a great year and it’s amazing to think that we are just one match away from the finals at Macreddin Village.’

Peter Warke, 23, only took up golf when a back injury forced him to give up serious rugby and athletics, where he ran at 200 and 400 metres.

Jim Warke said: ‘We’re a good team on the course. Very jovial. We have a good laugh and never have a go if either of us makes a mistake.’

Uniquely on their route to the last eight, the Warkes were drawn against and beat Whitehead, whose team consisted of another father and son team, Thomas and David Hill.

The semi-finals and final in both men’s and women’s competition are to be staged at the Paul McGinley-designed Macreddin Village course on September 6/7.
