SKIBBEREEN’S Henry Ross put himself in the record books when he landed the first ever hole-in-one in the Irish Mail All-Ireland Trophy with a perfect strike in the third round match at Beaufort.

Ross used a 4-iron on the 191-yard, 9th hole, but then had to try to put the feat at the back of his mind as he and his partner were in the middle of a tense match with a place in the last 16 at stake.

‘It was my first hole-in-one and it was great to score it in such an important competition. The ball bounced once and then just ran up the green and into the hole.

‘We couldn’t celebrate too much as we were in the middle of such an important match and didn’t want to lose our concentration. We knew we had to move on to the next tee and get on with the game,’ said Ross.

The hole-in-one came at a crucial moment in the round, giving Ross and his playing partner Pat Walsh a lead which they never lost, going on to win the match 2&1.

‘We are really enjoying the competition and looking to carry this lucky form all the way to the finals,’ added Ross.

The win puts Co.Cork club Skibbereen into the last 16 of the men’s competition, where they have been drawn away to Co. Limerick’s Adare. The surviving clubs are now just two matches away from the finals to be staged at the Paul McGinley-designed Macreddin Village course in September.
