IT WAS a late night for the club staff at East Cork waiting for yet another marathon Irish Mail Trophy match to end, in what is proving a year of dramatic sudden death finishes.
They would have had got home earlier if Kinsale’s Evelyn Lambe and Mary O’Hare had held on to their two hole lead at the 16th, but East Cork’s Ann O’Connor and Jean Guilfoyle fought back tenaciously to win the last two holes and halve the match.
As the club staff from the Gortacrue, Midleton club looked at their watches, the two pairs headed off again out on to the course for the sudden death play-off, which Kinsale eventually won at the 20th hole.
Kinsale’s Evelyn Lambe said: ‘We started the game at 4.00pm and by the time we got back to the club after playing the extra holes, the staff were waiting to lock up.
‘When we heard that we were drawn against East Cork on their own course, we knew that we faced formidable opponents, and it certainly proved a difficult game with a very close finish.’
Kinsale have now reached the last 32 of the Irish Mail All-Ireland Trophy and their late night out at East Cork has earned them a home fourth round tie against Castlegregory.
The final of the Irish Mail All-Ireland Fourball Trophy is to be played at the spectacular Macreddin course, designed by Ryder Cup hero Paul McGinley, in September. |
