A FORMER teenage footballer at Manchester City has helped to shoot Hilton Templepatrick into the last 32 of the Irish Mail All-Ireland Trophy.
Ronnie McCullough, who was at City for three years in the 1990s, joined with partner Stephen Jenkins to beat City of Belfast’s Thomas Lavery & Stephen Steele 2&1.
When he did not make the hoped-for footballing breakthrough in Manchester, McCullough came back from England to play for County Antrim team Ballyclare Comrades. Now 35, he is a health and safety consultant.
McCullough’s partner Stephen Jenkins said: ‘Ronnie coached football locally until recently, and he only took up golf since joining the club last year. But as with so many sportsmen he has the annoying ability to do well at any sport, while I on the other hand have had to work tirelessly at my golf for 20 years to reduce my handicap below six.
‘This is the first time that Ronnie and I have played in a pairs competition. Even though the first two rounds have been played at home, both proved to be extremely difficult with both matches against Kilrea and Mallusk (City of Belfast) going to the 17th. But we are delighted to be through to the last 32 and are looking forward to the next match,’ added Jenkins.
The final of the Irish Mail All-Ireland Fourball Trophy is to be played at the spectacular Macreddin course, designed by Ryder Cup hero Paul McGinley, in September. |
