Ciara's the toast of the bar after reaching the last 32 in a Rush

IT WAS celebration drinks all round as the locals in a Drumcondra pub toasted their barmaid after she was one of the heroes of the biggest third round win in the Irish Mail All-Ireland Trophy.

Rush Golf Club’s Ciara O’Gorman, who works part-time in Quinn’s in Drumcondra to help support herself at college, teamed up with Mary Louise Brennan for a 7&6 victory over Hollywood Lakes, which took Rush into the last 32 of the competition.

Ciara, 20, a full-time student at St.Patrick's College in Drumcondra where she is studying for a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and Geography,
said: ‘It was a good win, we just clicked on the day and dovetailed well. I’ve only been playing golf for two years now after my dad suggested it would be great to have a sport that I could play when I was older.’

Both players from the north Co.Dublin club are sports all-rounders. Ciara has played cricket for Ireland at Under 21 level, as well as badminton for Rush, while Marie Louis, who works at the Rotunda Hospital, has played camogie for Dublin club St.Monica's and has represented Dublin.

It is proving to be an eventful third round as three of Ireland’s top clubs crashed out of the women’s competition. Belvoir Park, former winners of The Mail on Sunday Classic, lost 4&3 to Malone’s pairing of Anne Chambers and Jane Gardner, Ryder Cup hosts the K Club were beaten 5&4 by Edenderry’s Noranne Callagy and Miriam Malone, while Castlerock’s Hilary Mullan and Pamela Telford chalked up a 5&4 win over Royal Portrush.
