THE golfing family Quigg have handed over the baton from the female side to the male as City of Derry look for success in the Irish Mail All-Ireland Trophy.
Over ten years City of Derry women have been one of the most successful teams in The Mail on Sunday Classic, twice winning the trophy in 1999 and 2004 and winning the Irish championship in 2000.
One of the stars of that side was former Ulster champion Naoimh Quigg, an Irish junior international in 1993, who led by inspiration as she captained the team to victory.
Now Naoimh’s brothers Sean,32, and Kevin,28, have teamed up to represent City of Derry in the Irish Mail Trophy and they began their challenge with an impressive 6&5 win over Coleraine club Brown Trout, one of the biggest wins of the first round.
Kevin, who was Irish Boys Under 16 champion in 1997, and Sean, captain of the Senior Cup team, come from a famous Derry golfing dynasty. Their father was club captain in 1986 and their mother is lady captain for 2009.
City of Derry’s team captain Neil Alcock said: ‘Historically the women have done a lot better than the men in these competitions, but both Sean and Kevin are very good players, playing off two and four handicap respectively. They have been quite successful in many club competitions, so I would be very surprised if they do not do well in the Irish Mail Trophy.’ |
